Is a wild animal that is active during the daytime rabid?

Rabies is one of those kinds of illnesses that human beings fear. We most often associate this viral disease would dogs, noting that when they are infected by the virus that they will foam at the mouth, become quite aggressive, and incredibly erratic in their behavior. They are truly dangerous animals when they have contracted the rabies virus.

Dogs are not the only animals that can get rabies, however. In fact, it is much more common in other kinds of animals, such as raccoons, then it is in dogs. It is likely that one out of every five raccoons that you would come across would have this illness. That means that if you are bitten or scratched by a raccoon you need to ensure that you receive treatment right away. You simply cannot take the risk.

Because of the erratic behavior that it will cause in animals, some get concerned when they see a wild animal that is out in the daylight acting in an aggressive or erratic manner. They are sure that that animal must have rabies if it is out in the daytime, so they wonder that if a wild animal is active during the day must it have rabies?

The answer to that question is no. First of all, many animals are active in the day as part of their normal daily processes. For example, squirrels can be seen collecting nuts and chasing one another all day long. They find the daylight hours absolutely perfect for them.

Where the concern is that you should have is when you are talking about animals that are nocturnal. If you look at a possum or a skunk, these animals do all of their business at nighttime because of the extremely poor vision that they have. Being out in the daylight is actually a huge risk to them because they cannot see very well but the predators that would hunt them see perfectly fine. So, if you see one of these animals in the daylight is it likely that it has rabies?

If you see a bat, possum, or other nocturnal animal like this out during the daytime then you can be sure of one thing: this animal has some kind of illness or injury that is causing it to bypass its normal way of thinking. This likely means that it has a serious illness that has crippled its brain or caused it to be unable to function as it normally would.

Does it have rabies? That is not the only cause for it to act erratically, but can be one reason why it is acting the way that it is. If it is out during the daylight, then you can be sure that it may act erratic in other ways. Usually animals that have rabies can be quite aggressive, meaning that this animal may attack you, so it is a good idea to stay as far away from them as you possibly can.
