There may be times where a wild animal has found its way into your attic through a crack or loose board in the siding of your home. It honestly doesn’t take much space for an animal such as a squirrel, bird, that, or other similar pest to find its way into your home to make as its own residence. Even larger animals are able to do so at times; such things as raccoons, possums, and other critters of this size.
When this happens, you would be surprised at what a terrible disaster that these little critters can make in your attic. Not only will they destroy memorabilia and clothing that you have stored in the attic area, but will frequently relieve themselves in some portion of your attic. This can lead to enormous health risks, including mold, if you do not take care of this right away.
Once you have excluded the animal from your attic, the real work is just about to start. There is a lot to do to clean up the waste from these critters, and you have to be extremely careful and thorough to make sure that you get all of the pathogens that these animals contain out of your home. Before doing anything, it is important that you make sure that all of the exposed areas of your skin are covered. This means wearing boots, heavy gloves, a surgical mask, hat, and goggles. The reason behind this is that this feces can become airborne as it dries, taking bacteria and parasites with it. By you breathing this in or getting it onto your skin you are actually putting your health at risk. This is why you have to protect yourself.
If you have a vacuum cleaner that does not allow particles to get out into the air as is being sucked in, then this is the place to start. You want to suck up as much of that waste as you possibly can without allowing the particles to become airborne.
Once this is done, you will need to get a blend of either ammonia and hot water or bleach and hot water to clean off the area where the animal has relieved itself. If you find that there are feces in the insulation or on items that you have in the attic, then it is best that you throw them away. Those things can be replaced but your health can’t.
Scrub the area thoroughly, then let it dry, and scrub it again. Make sure that you clean areas at least twice before deciding that you have eliminated all of the waste that is found. You may also want to buy special cleaners that are made for animal feces so that you ensure that you kill all of the bacteria and other pathogens that may be present. You should take no risk here.
