Do mothballs or ammonia help repel skunks?

If you have a skunk that is making the rounds around your property then you clearly want them to go away. These animals, when scared, release the most pungent and horrific spray that you can possibly imagine. If you have driven down the road and come across a place where a skunk has been hit then you know exactly what I am talking about. That smell can be absolutely horrific.

The problem is that the smell is not the only issue. These animals are big carriers of disease and parasites and these things can be quite hazardous to you, your family, and your pets. This is why you not only want them to go away, but you want them to stay away!

The solution that many look for is to see if there are homemade remedies that can be employed to get rid of them. Something that can be laid out around your property and that will cause the skunk to stay away. If you read on the internet, there is a lot of discussion about using ammonia or mothballs to get these animals to stay away, which may make you wonder if this actually works?

The theory behind it makes some sense. The chemical compound that is used in mothballs is quite abrasive and irritating to skunks. Of course, if you have smelled ammonia yourself then you know that this is a horrific smelling cleaner. It works to clean well, but the smell is not a pleasant one. That is why pine smell and other fragrances are added to eliminate the powerful odor of ammonia.

With this in mind, it would seem then that this would really work, but the truth is that it does not. First of all, for either to have any kind of effect you must use a large amount of either product. This will likely kill the grass and other plants that you have in the area, and will make the smell quite overwhelming for even yourself.

You also have to realize that this will wear off rather rapidly. When you clean your sink with ammonia and come back even a few hours later you can tell that ammonia was used but the smell is not nearly as strong. This is what will happen outside, but even more rapidly. You are in the open air so the effect will literally disappear with the wind.

When it rains, the mothballs and ammonia will be washed away, and you will have to keep putting the stuff out there. This will get quite costly and time consuming.

If you are looking for a way to keep skunks away, you need to look at much better options than this. It really is not even worth trying this. Read more: Skunk Control, how to kill skunks.
