What are some humane ways to kill an opossum in a cage?

Capturing an opossum is not always an easy task, and many opt for, once they have caught it, taking it to the wilderness somewhere and letting it go. They went to the trouble of capturing it and want to give it a chance at life somewhere else, as long as it is not on their property. This is a very humane choice indeed.

There are others who want to make sure that the rodent is dead and don’t want to just lay out a poison hoping it ate it and that it will not return. That is no option to them. They want to capture the possum, and then kill it so that they know they will have no further issues.

While many may consider this to be cruel, there is really no reason to feel this way. The opossum is the carrier of a vast number of diseases and this can be dangerous to you, your family and your pets. It may be in the interest of you and your neighbors that you rid the area of this animal.

However, the question becomes by what means to do this. You want it dead, but you don’t want to be cruel about it. You don’t want the animal to suffer, you simply want it gone. So that leads you to ask what are some humane ways to kill an opossum in a cage?

The first option would be to use a simple poison. Place it inside some kind of meat or other treat and let the opossum eat it. In a matter of a few minutes it will be killed off by the poison. If you use something like arsenic it does not take long to take effect. The animal may suffer some but it will not be for long. It will be dead and your problem will be solved.

Others look to traps that have killing mechanisms in them. When the animal enters the trap a spike is lodged into its brain killing it instantly. You don’t have to do anything but the cleanup.

If you do not have a trap like this, then you may have to apply the spike yourself. There are tools out there that allow you to reach the cage with a claw like mechanism. This allows you to capture the animal by its neck to get control of it. You then press a lever, which releases a spike, killing the opossum. Now, all you have is the cleanup.

These can be two simple and very humane ways to get the job done. You will no longer have the opossum on your property and you humanely disposed of it so that it cannot return. Read more: Opossum Control, How to Get Rid of Opossums, Opossum Feces.
