Florida's Troublesome Species of Wild Animals

Common Nuisance Wildlife Species

Raccoons: Raccoons are one of the most commonly dealt with nuisance animal species here in central Florida. They love to break into people's homes, garages, porches, lenais, and attics, and always make a mess of things.   Squirrels: The Eastern Gray Squirrel also loves to live inside the attics of people's homes, and will chew its way inside. Once inside, these rodents will often chew on wood and wires, not to mention the noise they make running around up there.

Opossums: Possums are scavengers - they frequently get into people's pet food and garbage. They often enter attics here in Florida - and once inside, they really make a mess! and often die inside an attic or wall or under a house.   Armadillos: Armadillos frequently choose to make a burrow next to or under a home or other cover, such as an AC unit. They also dig under sidewalks, decks, & sheds. They dig worms and grubs out of the ground, and can often dig up the landscaping.

Rats: Rats are probably the single most commonly dealt with nuisance animal here in Florida. The Roof Rat, also known as the Citrus Rat here in FL, invades any home with any small opening leading inside. They are nocturnal and agile.   Moles: The Eastern Mole is common in Florida yards. They dig through the soil with their powerful claws, and people often object to the surface tunnels that they create while searching out earthworms, grubs, and other underground insects.

Skunks: Known primarily for their strong smelly spray, these animals often live under a shed or house, where they can have babies and cause you odor problems. They also often dig up lawns in search of worms and grubs.   Woodchucks: These rodents dig a large network of tunnels throughout a property, often next to a house. They are herbivores, and thus often cause significant damage to gardens and crops. They are true hibernators, who emerge every spring.

Birds: Pigeons are common in urban areas. They often roost in public areas, such as on building ledges, beams, and store signs. They also frequently live in attics, and I deal with groups of pigeons living in the attics of homes.   Bats: Even though the bats are good for insect control, they can form huge groups, and cause significant noise and especially odor problems with their thousands of droppings and gallons of urine. I specialize in no-kill Florida bat removal.

Snakes: Central Florida has four species of venomous snake - the Eastern Diamondback Rattler, the Pigmy Rattler, the Cottonmouth, and the Coral Snake. Most snakes are harmless, but the general rule for any snake: just leave it alone!   Dead Animals: Every animal on this list eventually dies, and when they do, they decay and cause a very strong odor. If the animal happens to die in your walls or attic, you'll want it removed immediately. The most common are rats & opossums.

I operate a professional wildlife removal business in Orlando Florida. It is not a pest control or extermination company, nor is it the county animal control. It is a privately owned nuisance critter and wildlife control business. Can you find dangerous wildlife at Disney World Resort? Probably not much. That place is almost entirely insect and animal free. I don't know how they do it. I very rarely get called to take care of animal problems down near the Disney Area. Orlando is home to many species of animals, but I only come into contact with the ones that cause people trouble - most of these animals have a knack for breaking into people's homes and attics, and it is up to me to remove them and fix the damage and mess that they've caused.
